The Carolina Panthers voided the contract of veteran safety Roman Harper just after the Super Bowl, and have been said to be very interested in the services of another veteran free-agent safety, Eric Weddle. However rumors have began to come out that Weddle and the Oakland Raiders have some mutual interest and could be closing in on a deal. If this does in fact happen, the Panthers should go back to Roman Harper.
There are many reasons Harper still makes sense for the Panthers, even at 34 years old. First Harper has been with the Panthers for two full seasons now, and has shown he can still play well. Also the Panthers have an explosive young safety in Tre Boston that could, and should start at safety in 2016, meaning Harper would still have an impact on the Panthers defense, but wouldn't have to be the relied upon every down safety as in years past. Harper knows the Panthers system and fits it well. Harper has also made it known that he wants to return to Carolina and if the Panthers don't get Weddle, they should look no further than Harper.
Also lets not forget, Harper was a respected leader in the Panthers locker room and vastly helped the Panthers young secondary group become one of the best in the league, Harper is good for the Panthers and a player and a leader.
